Gone, Never Forgotten

On September 15th , 2007 we lost a great human being. Galen "Shep" Shepherd lost a hard fought battle with cancer. Shep, among other things was the guy who I conned into going along with me to begin our racing endeavors. In September 1985, I convinced Shep that racing would be a fun thing for us to do. He had already retired once from racing, but with very little resistance, he agreed.

Over the next several years, Suzie and Linda became racing widows. Then, along came the boys and Nellie and the rest, is as they say, history.

Shep was with the team on July 4th when the 2 car won the feature at 34 raceway. He had a smile the size of Texas that night. Shep was the key guy for me for so many years; he was my sounding board and my cheerleader through thick and thin. He was more than a friend; he was like an older brother who could be my conscience and my redeemer.

When his health began to fail, he was such a trouper and we managed to share many close moments right up to the end. I never imagined that I, too, would be diagnosed with cancer, something else we shared, although not very pleasant. But, even his insight on that score meant the world to me. Rest in peace, brother, your memories will be cherished forever.
